Catching up
Wow, it's been a long time since I last blogged. I keep meaning to, but then life happens. Better late than never right!
I'm not even going to try to catch up chronologically or anything. I'll just post some pics that I finally downloaded from my camera :)
Back in May, W and I celebrated our sixth anniversary. For a variety of reasons (mostly related to needing to be around for our families), we weren't able to take a trip to celebrate. First time we've missed an anniversary trip since we got married, but I think that's a pretty good track record. W got me some pretty flowers and a really sweet card (who knew an engineer could write such lovely prose--I think he's even surprised himself!). Of course, we didn't skip celebrating with food :) We headed back to one of our favorite local restaurants, Ming Tsai's Blue Ginger. I finally tried one of his signature dishes, a black pepper garlic lobster. Unfortunately, it wasn't as good as I expected--one of his other signature dishes, a butterfish, is much better--but overall we had a great meal. We chatted with a few couples at tables by ours and four of us in a row were all celebrating anniversaries. It is a special occasion kind of restaurant but it was still pretty funny. We were the youngest couple by probably at least a decade (both in age and married years) but that will be us in time!

He cooks!
I've been in such a cooking funk lately. I've had no desire to make anything, look at recipes--none of it. So my dear hubby recently picked up the slack and made several amazing meals for us. These are all out of a Costco cookbook that I think they gave out for free a long time ago.
Now, you have to understand that Willy's usual cooking style is to throw some kind of protein (probably chicken) into a pan, add some spicy peppers, and voila! It's a meal! :) The only seasoning he really knows how to cook with is spicy, so the fact that he actually used recipes was kind of a big deal.
His first effort: Mexican Chicken Soup. And, wow, was it good! Ironically, it had chicken and was spicy, but was clearly more sophisticated than what he'd made previously. Just look at that masterpiece! The flavors were distinctly Mexican and nothing is better than hot soup on cold fall/winter nights. Yum!

Next up: Chicken Pho with Fresh Herb Salad. I love noodle soup of pretty much any kind, and Willy went all out with the traditional garnishes too: basil leaves, beansprouts, limes, and jalapeno peppers. It was yummy, though not quite as flavorful as the Mexican soup. But, still, noodle soup...me likey.
And finally, we have Baked Cod with onions, olives, and diced tomatoes. I loved it. Seriously, it was so, so good. And I love broccolli, too, so the whole dish was just very satisfying. Who knew my hubby could cook like this?!
Now how do I get him to do this all the time??? ;)

Sock Monkeys!
Some people love 'em, some people think they're creepy...hopefully you have the former reaction to one of my recent crochet projects!
I made this sock monkey blanket and hat for my college roommate, who's pregnant with her first baby. I've had the pattern saved for a while and was excited to finally make it. It's my first granny square-style blanket, which means each of the squares are made separately and then seamed together at the end. Definitely more work than a regular blanket made in one piece, but the final product was totally worth it. Definitely my favorite baby blanket so far...but then again, it seems like every time I make something it turns into my new favorite, haha!
On a totally separate note, I apologize to the three people who actually read this blog for my long hiatus between updates. The sock monkey set would have been my next post but I wanted to wait until after the shower in October to post it, just in case my friend decided to become my fourth reader ;) Then life just got busy. But I'll try to be better...in the New Year (heehee)!

A New Neighbor
I was doing some work in the yard this evening and found half of a tiny egg shell sitting in the mulch under a tree in our front yard. I discovered a bird's nest in this tree last year, but when we did our spring clean up a few months ago I had Willy remove the old nest. So I was a little surprised to look up and see the tail of a bird, which was sitting atop, you guessed it, a nest!
I don't know if the egg shell was from a hatched or eaten bird, but it was empty. I wish I'd taken a pic of that too. Anyway, here's our new neighbor guarding her baby/ies. You know I'm going to be out there every day now checking for progress!

Santorini Part 1: Some reviews
OK, reviews first...
Car Rental: So I know this isn't the most interesting review to start with, but I'm just writing this up more or less in the order that I took pictures in because that's the path of least resistance :) After checking out
First, upon check in, we were given a room at a different facility.
Strike #2 were a couple of room setup details. Remember when I said my raving over the shower in Naxos was important in contrast to the shower in Satorini? Well I wish I'd taken a pic of the actual shower here, but basically the handheld shower head was mounted maybe three feet up from the floor with no way to stand under a stream of water. I think it's a pretty common occurrence in Santorini, but it was one I had tried to avoid and it made showering a chore instead of a comforting luxury. There wasn't much space to move around in the shower either and the lack of a door left us splashing water everywhere.
The other room setup issue was the fact that the bed was pushed up against the wall on one side. The first night, Willy bumped his knee more than once and we had to pad the wall with extra towels the rest of the stay.
Strike #3: The pool was tiny. I'm talking, 5'1" me pullng maybe two strokes and I'm at the other end of the pool. Santorini isn't
But, OK, the view was really nice :)

We interrupt the travel updates for a crochet project
There are some imperfections, like you'll see in the second pic that the top edge of the side pocket doesn't line up with the top edge of the front pocket, and that's largely because I forgot to crochet the top pink edge of the side pocket before sewing it on so I didn't have that visual aid to line them up. Oh well, that's how you know it's hand-made, right? :)

Naxos
The hotel was also steps from St. George Beach. The only downside is that they charge you 3 euros to use one of the chairs. Because we're cheap ;) we decided to sit by the hotel pool instead, which was a beautiful infinity pool so it wasn't much of a sacrifice.
E
The best part of the hotel was the staff. Kostas was super friendly and not only gave us a ton of restaurant recommendations but even told us what to order. Stefano was a hilarious dude who reallyknows how to get a party started. The hotel hosted a BBQ night complete with dancing afterwards and Stefano single-handedly got a bunch of strangers to start doing Greek dances and generally get their groove on. I will say it's a little disturbing seeing 40+ year old women go all stripper pole on a support beam in the middle of the dining area.
There are three
museums in the area. The Archaeological Museum was OK, but it was kind of weird that most of the pieces only had signs in Greek because English is pretty prevalent everywhere in Greece, both written and spoken. It was certainly a more quaint/rustic setting than your typical museum, so things felt more accessible. The Venetian Museum was pretty cool; it's a house that's still privately owned but made available to the public to see the various items in the life of one Greek family over the years. Finally, there's the Folk Art Museum where we could have seen things like the silk production process that produced the scarves I bought , but we never made it there.
Outside of the Kastro/Bourgos, the island also has a famous Portara, or Great Door. It was intended to be the entryway to a huge temple, but construction stopped when war broke out.
We rented an ATV for a day to explore other parts of the island. You don't really want your driver with that look on his face at any point while navigating the windy roads :P

And to finish things off, two pictures that sum up my thousand words of what vacation is all about:
Next up: Santorini.
We're back from Greece: Athens

So sore
It was a lovely weekend in Boston this past weekend, with lots of sun (though a bit too much wind too, if I'm honest). We tried to be outdoors as much as possible. Saturday was less fun as we spent several ours spreading mulch around our plant beds. Not great on my back, which has been bugging me for no apparent reason for the last couple of weeks, but the yard looks nice.
Sunday I played in a coed reverse C-level Yankee tournament. I ended up setting on the men's net, which was interesting seeing as I haven't played the role of setter in years. I did better than I expected of myself (which isn't saying I suppose much considering how low my expectations were!), but not great. But between playing the new position and all that crawling around spreading mulch, my body is pretty sore today. I also have a mystery bruise on the back of my thigh that's that gross dark purple color--no idea how I got it.
I know I'm out of shape but I haven't been this sore in a while. Hoping to get lots of physical activity in while we're vacationing in Greece (we leave in less than a week!)--so, so, so excited for our trip!
